Resolution?January 04, 2010

There are a great many articles this time of year about motivation to change, making a pledge or just plain old wishful thinking. The fact of the matter is, that on a variable day of the week, a date on the calendar instigates a pressure to reflect. January 1st is no doubt the most universal. The question is what is a resolution?

A resolution is the act of simplifying a complexity, coming to a solution – it is a convergence to a point. How then, does this relate to the reflection and analysis of ones shortcomings? When asked about a new years resolution – most, if not all, can answer in a simple phrase or sentence. Is this the resolution? Our ability to concentrate this point into vocabulary?

Certainly this is not the intent – as humans we profess one or more of our reflections in the hopes that this moment of humility will be the drop in the pool that starts the change we want to see in our lives. This single drop will provide the wave power to carry us though. Although cliché – it is as if we all drop a pebble into a pond to start our own wave – it is the beginning, the excitement is palpable. However as we watch – most of the waves cancel each other out. They become unrecognizable in the horizon, a part of the complex sea from once they first came.

Change. It is easy to identify, simple to suggest, but in general difficult to attain. Add voluntary to the description and you have added a magnitude of complexity. Failure enters the picture – there is no adverse condition to blame, only oneself. This act of voluntary change is the one that we each must crack for our own selves. I have witnessed, in the media and personally, people change their spending habits over this past year due to the changes in the economy. Most are happy about these changes, it has given them perspective and improved the health of their relationship with their needs and wants. Or more realistically, people have accepted these changes and are choosing to view them in a positive way. How does one then harness this intrinsic ability to adapt that we all know we possess as humans?

There are many “tools” and “rules” that address change – I do not want to re-craft, or re-order these items. I agree with creating a support group, making your goals realizable, writing them down etc. Human behavior is complex – a combination and culmination of experiences. Is there a 10 step method to instigate change? Perhaps. Will is resonate with everyone? Certainly not. There is, however a solution for us all, and this is what I would challenge people to set as their resolution. Resolve what works for you. Examine your process, experiment and keep trying. Develop this routine so that when you are faced with a challenge, you have created a framework that will supply you with the best chance of success. Imagine how much less intimidating change will become if you have confidence in your ability to pave that road. Do you need to pay someone to keep you accountable? Do you need a deadline, a program or isolation? These are the questions that need to be answered – to me this is the true resolution. Simplify a complexity, come to a solution for yourself so that you can live to the best of your ability all year round.
